New Merger: PDP To Change Name?
New Merger: PDP To Change Name
By Sola Sadiq -/-
The commencement of merger talks between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and four other parties may likely lead to the renaming of the leading opposition party, sources have revealed.
In the last few weeks, the former ruling party has been engaged in intensive discussions with four other political parties namely the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Accord Party (AP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Information indicates these are moves preparatory to the formation of a new ‘mega’ party that would challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections.
Sources disclosed that while chieftains of the smaller political parties have agreed in principle to merge with the PDP, they are however insisting that a change of name of the proposed new party is imperative.
Though the decision makers in the PDP have not given a nod to this condition, citing the need to consult widely before making any commitment, a source in the party, who is a former senator, said most of the party leaders are positively disposed to the idea.
In the last few days, the party leaders have met with some of its founding fathers, most of whom have endorsed the merger talks and the total rebranding of the party.
