PDP Leaders Angry With Jonathan Over Sheriff’s Visit

By Sola Sadiq -/- Nigerian Politics

The recent visit of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Maitama, Abuja residence of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan is not going down well with prominent members of the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the party.
Sometime last week, the court of appeal-approved chairman of PDP, in company of other members of his group had visited Jonathan about 48hours after a similar visit by the Makarfi faction.
Sources disclosed that not a few leaders loyal to Makarfi were shocked that Jonathan agreed to host Sheriff without taking them into confidence of the planned visit..
An angry senior PDP member said: “We (Makarfi group) were shocked when we read in the newspapers of Sheriff’s visit to Dr. Jonathan. We had also visited the former president two days earlier, but he never told us he would be hosting him. For most of us, the ex-president is sending the wrong message. He must take a stand now on the lingering crisis in the party.”
The displeasure expressed by members of the Makarfi faction, sources revealed, explains why Jonathan’s media aide, Jonathan Eze, issued a press statement to debunk widespread reports that the former president has endorsed the leadership of Sheriff.
And perhaps to be doubly sure of Jonathan’s position, some former ministers who served under him, also visited the former president to get assurances that he is not tacitly backing the former Borno governor.
